REGULATE Then EDUCATE: Recognize & Respond to the Impact of Childhood Trauma

Session #1-October 26, Session #2-October 28

Donna Lucero will lead you through a journey of understanding basic brain function and the impact of trauma on the brain’s organization, function, and structure.  With this understanding you will then explore examples of struggles for children impacted by trauma, and how you can recognize and respond to children with appropriate interventions.

We understand that trauma is a public health issue with lasting impacts.  These impacts can result in life long social, physical, and behavioral struggles.  There is an antidote.  To REGULATE and EDUCATE are the cornerstones of how to recognize the impacts of trauma, and then, how to actively engage in the healing of trauma.

You will review various intervention strategies and current research in the field of trauma and neuroscience.  Participants will come away with concrete suggestions, activities, and methods to use working with children/youth/families impacted by trauma. Tools are easy, practical and support regulation and relationship.

Objectives:

  • To understand the impact of trauma on brain function and structure with emphasis on the profound impact upon the organization of the brain and how it relates to self-regulation.
  • To learn how using a trauma sensitive lens to help guide interventions, gain understanding, and  manage trauma responses.
  • To explore the importance of physical activity, movement, music, art, animals, and human connection to heal trauma.
